Ripe strawberries and beautiful weather mean that summer is here...even if not officially, which I guess would be the Summer Solstice, and that's not until June. And, of course, it looks like summer for a lot of the year in San Diego. But, I digress. So easily distracted today.
What I came here to write about was strawberries, wonderful, delicious, fresh off the vine strawberries picked by my own little men. We went to a pick-your-own strawberry field earlier this week for the first time and we loved it! I did have to cut the outing short because they ate about as many strawberries as they put in the buckets and I was pretty sure they were going to get sick if they ate any more.
Here are the cutest little strawberry pickers I've ever seen.
And our beautiful sweet rewards for all that strawberry
scarfing I mean picking.
That night, I made homemade angel food cake for the first time. If you've never made angel food, it is a simple cake to make. Sort of meditative with all the sifting and beating. I really enjoyed making it and I don't always enjoy cooking....
Here is one of the three rounds of sifting.
And what is homemade angel food cake without homemade whipped cream?
Oh. My. Gosh.
1 chilled bowl, 1 chilled beater, 1 cup heavy whipping cream, 2 T sugar, 1/4 t vanilla = perfection
And this was our reward for all that picking, baking, and whipping.
My husband and I settled into our sweet treat after the kids went down the other night.
As we're eating, I said, "All this baking from scratch makes me feel like..." And simultaneously, my husband said "Martha Stewart" and I said "June Cleaver".
Oh, to be a combination of real-life crafty savvy businesswoman and perfect motherly TV fiction...
the strange things I daydream about.
I hope you have some great weather this weekend
and some sweet treats with your loves.
Happy Friday!Pin It
