Old Jeans to New Shorts

This morning I whipped up (seriously, it was that fast!) a new pair of long shorts from my favorite pair of jeans using this tutorial that I found here. It's getting hot here and I don't have much in the way of warm weather clothes. So I trolled the internet looking for shorts patterns...here are the fruits of my labor. And, eek, you get to see what I look like...such a mommy.

I loved loved loved these jeans but they were starting to look pretty bad.
The knees were super thin (one had a hole), and I had already put iron-on denim patches on the inside of the knees to buy myself a couple extra months (good trick, by the way, if the knees are starting to wear on your jeans).
I made a couple changes to the tutorial instructions simply because I'm a little lazy. (I know there are more like me out there...) Rather than using the extra denim and the print fabric as a binding tape, I just made a cuff. Like this...
The only thing this requires differently is a little math in reverse. Decide the length you want your shorts and then subtract about 3 1/2 inches before cutting. Oh, and it's hard to tell in the pic, but the cuffs are darker than the legs and it ended up that I really liked it.
You should try this - really! Pin It

  1. Check out this tutorial for altering jeans...you may be able to use it for the shorts too.

  2. OK, I love that tutorial for keeping the original hem! I'll have to try that on the next pair of jeans I massacre. :) I do really hate losing that hem when I shorten pants (as I almost always have to). Thanks!
